The Three Golems of the Valley
A New World Myth
Did you ever hear the tale of how three golems, relics of the old world, ended up in the new world? No? Of course you haven’t. Rabbis love to tell the tale of the Golem of Prague or of Chelm, all hifelufelem lyalkes! Pfffe! No one ever talks about New World. They forget we were there too, since before America was a country, we were there! And —oh– our golems, the new world golems, those were golems! I should know! I made them and unmade them! Who am I you ask? Not some fakakta alte kaker! I am Asser Levy, one of the first Jews to step foot in the North American colonies. My golems, they were behemoths, titans, like the old Greek gods. Not that I claim I created gods, so strike me down, Elohiem! Ah ha! See? I speak the truth!
Oy, who let me ramble on! This tale is important! It is our past and our present! If you will permit me, I shall tell you the tale of the Three Golems of the Valley, and afterword you can decide if it is important or not…
